Friday Social Dance Classes: No partner necessary! Instructor Brennen Renteria will teach you the basics in this friendly, fun class for all levels. Students partner with each other. This is not a drop-in class — these are 5-week sessions and the class builds week to week. Students should plan to take all five classes, however if you can’t be there the first week you can start week two, after that the class is closed to new students. Styles vary for each 5-week session. Typical styles offered include Rumba, Bachata, Jitterbug Swing, Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango and Salsa. Check the schedule page for the current offerings.
Ballet Basics: Designed for students with very little to no experience in ballet technique, or for those that are coming back to ballet. In this class, dancers spend a majority of time at the ballet barre working on posture, strength, and body awareness.
Beginning Ballet: Designed for students with minimal experience in ballet technique. Students in this class should be familiar with basic French ballet terminology, have good posture, and are further developing their sense of musicality.
Advanced Beginner Ballet: For advanced beginners who have a strong foundation in basic ballet terminology and technique. Dancers in this level should be comfortable learning combinations more quickly both in barre and in center, doing combinations facing away from the barre, and are working towards the intermediate level.
Intermediate Ballet: For intermediate level dancers who have a strong foundation in basic ballet terminology and technique.
Ballet Stretch & Strengthen: No ballet experience is needed for this low-impact, full body workout. The class uses Pilates and ballet inspired conditioning exercises to strengthen, and then ends with stretching to improve flexibility. Yoga mats and exercise bands are provided. You are also welcome to bring your own yoga mat.
Beginning Contemporary: Those new to dance will enjoy this accessible and engaging class. GDS instructor Amy Williams focuses on incorporating technique, and always explains the purpose and mechanics of basic movements. Ample time and space is left for questions and clarification. The main focus of class is the quality of movement, feeling rhythms and patterns, and emoting through choreography. As much as technique, these things are essential to a dancer’s foundation.
Intermediate Contemporary: This class is for students who have some previous experience or training in contemporary dance, or with other related dance styles such as ballet, modern and jazz. Intermediate Contemporary Jazz: Expand your dance vocabulary with emphasis on both jazz and contemporary styles. The class includes technique training, warm up exercises, across the floor combinations, and choreographic variations. Students with prior experience in jazz, modern, contemporary, or ballet styles will be best prepared for the class.
Tap Basics: This class is for students who are brand new to tap. If you have never had a tap class before this class is for you! If you don’t have tap shoes we have a limited selection of loaner shoes; you can also wear any hard-soled shoe for your first class.
Beginning Tap: This class is appropriate for beginning level tap students. The class starts with a basic warm up and moves on to learning technique and tap combinations. Tap shoes are required but there are some loaner tap shoes available for new students.
Intermediate Tap: This class is designed for students with some tap experience, focusing on clean sounds, learning variations of rhythms, and working towards learning more complex tap combinations and choreography.
Intermediate Modern: This class is a blend of the classic codified techniques of Graham, Humphrey and Limon fused with the instructors own innate sense of movement. An emphasis is placed on the initiations and connections of movement, musicality and a sense of weight, all while focusing on an intelligent awareness of alignment and core structure. Classes typically begin on the floor then progress to warming up the upper back/arms, then moving on to the feet, legs and hips. Classes finish with a group combination that incorporates all the elements that were worked on throughout the class. Technique exercises are usually kept and developed throughout 3 weeks while combos are developed throughout 4-6 weeks.
Performance Workshop: This is an opportunity for dancers to spend a quarter learning a piece of choreography. There will be no warm-up, so dancers who have not recently taken class will have the chance to warm themselves up at the beginning of class. After the first two weeks of the session, this class is no longer drop-in.
BeMoved®: This class is a dance fitness experience for people of all movement abilities. The Warm-Up infuses breath and movement through choreographed, artistic sequences that activate core strength and balance while improving flexibility and coordination. The Genre section of class uses continuous, engaging dance combinations to inspire anyone from first-time dancers to professionals. Finally, the Cool Down brings your workout full circle, leaving you balanced in mind, body and soul and feeling rejuvenated.
Musical Theatre: This choreography-focused class is designed for students new to dance as well as experienced dancers who are interested in exploring the different styles of movement incorporated in Broadway musicals, with influences from jazz, contemporary, modern and ballet. Dancers in this class typically spend 2-3 weeks working on a single piece or dance, with the last week focused on staging.
Sassy Heels: Learn fun, sassy dance moves at Sassy Heels! Each class will include a warm-up, across the floor combinations to better understand how to dance and perform in heels, and a new choreography combination each week. Don’t want to wear heels? The class will be just as much sassy fun without heels.
