Class Descriptions

Social Dance

  • Wedding Ready: Wedding Ready is a drop-in class that will equip you with tools and tips to master turns and dips, as well as many fundamental ballroom dance concepts, so that you may feel calm, classic, and confident when dancing at a wedding (or any other venue with popular music). Each week we will explore one dance concept across multiple social styles including waltz, rumba, fox trot, hustle, and swing. Your posture (and partner) will thank you!
  • Intermediate Social Latin Club: If already know the basics of Latin dance styles like Salsa and Bachata, and want to apply that to going dancing at salsa venues, this class is for you! The class will focus on a different dance style each month, such as salsa, bachata, merengue and cha cha. The first Friday of the month will be a review of basics, then throughout the month students will work to develop stronger rhythm and sophisticated style, so that you can feel coordinated on the dance floor regardless of song played.

BeMoved®: This is a low-impact dance fitness class for all levels. It is a “follow along” class, which means you are not trying to remember choreography, you are just following the instructor and doing what they do. It starts and ends with a warm-up and cool-down, both of which are done standing (no getting down on the floor). The middle section is the “genre” section which changes every week — it could be 80s music, or gospel pop, or swing music, or even Bollywood. That part of the class gets your heart rate up and keeps you moving! You will leave this class feeling energized and refreshed!

Musical Theatre: Learn fun, original choreography to Broadway songs while exploring different styles of movement incorporated in Broadway musicals, with influences from jazz, contemporary, modern and ballet in this class for all levels. Typically the class will work on one pieces of chorography for two weeks, but new students are welcome to drop in any time since the previous week is always reviewed.

Jazz

  • Beginning Jazz: This class is designed to teach beginning jazz technique, from its sassy, expressive style to basic jazz turns, kicks and leaps. The class will start with a warm up, it will include technique and across-the-floor exercises, and will end with a fun, jazzy dance combo. No experience is necessary to take this class!
  • Broadway Jazz (Open Level): This open-level class (i.e., mixed levels) will feature a warm-up, across-the-floor exercises, and a choreography combination. The focus will be on exaggerated movements rooted in various jazz styles. Heels and/or character shoes are encouraged, but not required. Broadway jazz is unique with its high-energy movements and storytelling expressions.
  • Advanced Contemporary Jazz Technique: This advanced level class will expand your dance vocabulary with emphasis on both jazz and contemporary styles. The class includes technique training, warm up exercises, across the floor combinations, and choreographic variations. Students must have prior dance experience in jazz, modern, contemporary, or ballet styles. Students will work on multiple pirouette combinations, fouetté turns, and advanced leaps and jumps during the across the floor progressions.

Ballet

The following are recommendations for the ballet levels. We encourage you to err on the side of trying a class that is too easy first rather than jumping into a class that is too hard.

  • If you have never taken a ballet class, we recommend starting Ballet Basics (Level 1; Fridays, Saturdays, and Mondays) when a new session begins. If you took ballet as a child or in the past, you are welcome to join Ballet Basics at any time.
  • If you last took ballet as a child or are still at an early stage of your ballet journey, we recommend starting with Beginning Ballet (Level 2; Sundays).
  • We recommend having at least 2.5 years of consistent weekly ballet classes before joining Advanced Beginning Ballet (Level 3; Thursdays).
  • We recommend at least 4 years of consistent weekly ballet classes before joining Intermediate Ballet (Level 4; Wednesdays & Saturdays).
  • For the “Intro to Pointe” class we recommend that you have been taking class at least once or ideally twice weekly at the advanced beginner and/or intermediate level for at least two years before attempting pointe. This class is not suitable for beginners or those who have very recently returned to ballet.
  • Ballet Basics (Level 1): If you have never had a ballet class before, this class is for you! It is also a great class for students with some ballet knowledge who want to work on basics. The class builds throughout the session so those new to ballet should try to start at the beginning of the session, but you can also drop in anytime and just follow along with what the class is doing. Those with some ballet knowledge can drop in any time.
  • Beginning Ballet (Level 2): Designed for students who know the basics of ballet but are still at a beginning level. Students in this class should already be familiar with common French ballet terminology and the basic ballet positions.
  • Advanced Beginner Ballet (Level 3): For advanced beginners who have a strong foundation in basic ballet terminology and technique. Dancers in this level should be comfortable learning combinations more quickly both in barre and in center, doing combinations facing away from the mirror, and are working towards the intermediate level.
  • Intermediate Ballet (Level 4): For intermediate level dancers who have a strong foundation in basic ballet terminology and technique.
  • Intro to Pointe (Level 1): This class provides intermediate or advanced beginner level students with an introduction to pointe. It will start with pre-pointe strengthening exercises. With instructor permission, students will the move on to going on pointe and doing basic pointe exercises.
  • Beginning Pointe (Level 2): This class is for ballet students who are fairly comfortable on pointe but are still at a beginning level and would like to refine and practice their technique.
  • Contemporary Ballet Choreography: Dancers with a strong foundation in ballet terminology and technique, at the advanced beginning and intermediate levels, can build their artistry, musicality, and stage presence through this class. The class will learn contemporary ballet choreography. This is not a drop-in class; each piece will be worked on for 3 to 4 weeks. If you wish to join the class mid-session, please contact us at info@glenwooddancestudio.com to find out when the class will start the next variation.

Modern and Contemporary

  • Beginning Contemporary: Those new to dance will enjoy this accessible and engaging class. The class starts with a warm-up which incorporates basic dance technique, and includes learning a short dance combination.  The main focus of class is the quality of movement, feeling rhythms and patterns, and emoting through choreography.
  • Intermediate Contemporary: This class is for students who have some previous experience or training in contemporary dance, or with other related dance styles such as ballet, modern and jazz. The class includes warm up exercises, across the floor combinations, and choreographic variations.

Tap

  • Tap Basics (Level 1): This class is for students who are brand new to tap. If you have never had a tap class before this class is for you! If you don’t have tap shoes we have a limited selection of loaner shoes; you can also wear any hard-soled shoe for your first class. If possible those brand new to tap should start at the beginning of the session, but you can also drop in anytime and just follow along with what the class is doing. Those with some tap knowledge can drop in any time.
  • Beginning Tap (Level 2): This class is for students with some tap knowledge who are still at a beginning level. The class starts with a basic warm up and moves on to learning technique and tap combinations. Tap shoes are required but there are some loaner tap shoes available for new students.
  • Intermediate Tap (Level 3/4): This class is designed for students who have a strong foundation in tap technique and are ready to advance their skills. The class focuses on clean sounds, learning variations of rhythms, and working towards learning more complex tap combinations and choreography.
